Kidneys Got Talent

(25599 byte/s)

Dear Colleagues:

Greetings! As in previous years, we will be celebrating the kidney month this June 2010 and the theme for this year’s celebration is “HEALTHY KIDNEYS, HEALTHY FAMILY”.

In keeping with our advocacy to educate our patients and the general public about the importance of kidney disease prevention and treatment, we again would like to enjoin the general membership to take active participation in the National Kidney Month celebration.

One of the highlights of the PSN activities is the yearly Family Day Celebration wherein kidney patients, together with the doctors, nurses and our friends from the pharmaceutical industry come together for more active social interaction. This is to emphasize that patients who are well cared can achieve a reasonably active and happy lifestyle. This year’s Family Day Celebration is entitled “KIDNEYS GOT TALENT’ and will be held June 13, 2010, Sunday, 6:00 am to 12:00 noon at Amoranto Sports Complex, in Quezon City. It will showcase talents of our patients and dialysis staff. This is open to all kidney patients and PSN members.  You are encouraged to send your patients with their families to join this fun and festive event.

In addition, the Public Health Committee will conduct lay fora in several venues.  It has lined up radio and television interviews to further promote the advocacies of our society. Let us keep the enthusiasm for this event and reach out to as many people as we can by doing our own projects in our hospitals of practice and in our communities. We may tie up with local radio and TV stations, officials, health units to have wider public coverage. For those who intend to conduct lay fora, there are lecture materials on file which are available at our Secretariat upon request.

Finally, please send us a summary report of your activities to include photos (if any) to the PSN Secretariat to fully document our nationwide celebration and as well as our participation as active members of the society,

The Amazing Kidney Race

A Charity Race for Kidney Disease Awareness and Patients

(301451 byte/s)

Our kidneys are amazing! The kidneys play a vital role in the body’s complex and crucial processes. As an acknowledgement of the kidneys’ amazing role in human physiology and in celebration of World Kidney Day 2010, the Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN), in cooperation with UP Family Life and Child Development Circle, is staging a rare race event dubbed as “The Amazing Kidney Race.” To be held in the scenic and breezy campus of UP Diliman, “The Amazing Kidney Race” promises to give beginner and seasoned runners alike a unique and exciting racing experience.

Institutionalizing the humanitarian dimension of running and race events is what the PSN aims to accomplish in staging “The Amazing Kidney Race.” Proceeds of this race event will be used mainly for supporting the kidney disease awareness campaign of PSN and the operation and treatment of kidney patients, and partly for the UP Child Development Center. Likewise, this race is among the platform events of PSN adjunct to the global celebration of World Kidney Day.

As PSN aims to pull off a fun yet challenging race, “The Amazing Kidney Race” will have four event categories. There is the 15K Relay Race limited only to 50 teams. Each team shall be composed of 5 members who will correspondingly complete the 1k-2k-3k-4k-5k race distances to complete a total of 15 kilometers. Adding twist to this race category are the baton passing and challenges that must be met by the relay runners in the handover zones to complete transition. Then there is the heart-warming 2.2K Parent-Child Tandem Run especially allocated for Mom/Dad-Child team-ups. During the race, participants and spectators will get a touching sight of a parent egging on and encouraging her/his child who is determined to give his/her all. There is also the 5K UP FLCD Circle Challenge, a banner event of event-partner UP FLCD Circle, particularly catered to beginner runners or veteran racers who have the need for speed. And finally there is the centrepiece event, the 15K Eliminator Pursuit, where race participants will get an adrenalin rush as they negotiate UP Diliman campus’ best kept running course secret – the Heartbreak Route. 15K racers will get to know first-hand why it is called as such. And as if the route is still not inviting, all participants who meet the 45-minute half-way mark or 1hour 45minutes finish point cut-off times will receive a Finishers’ Medal.

Both 15K and 5K solo race events will have MD and Open categories and subsequent male and female divisions. Top three individual and group finishers in all events and categories will be awarded with medals and certificates of achievement.

“The Amazing Kidney Race” is presented with the support of Activelink, in cooperation with event partners RunRadio @ NU107 FM, RunnerSpeak @ QTV11, Second Wind Running Store, ROX, and the exclusive on-line media partner, thebullrunner.com. Registration has started! For inquiries, feel free to contact Dr. Czarlota Valdenor 0915-2966116.

Warm greetings!

It is a pleasure to invite you to be our partner in mounting a unique race event dubbed as “The Amazing Kidney Race” on March 7, 2010 in UP Diliman. Please refer to the enclosed event profile for a backgrounder.

Running has been an individual and self-directed sport activity. To many, it is a great way of getting out of the daily grind and a means of de-stressing. For some, it is an opportunity to take on new challenge and attain further personal achievements. And to almost everyone, it is an effective pursuit to be fit and healthy, especially if properly regimented. Perhaps, all these may be the reasons why running is experiencing a boom in the country nowadays.

As running continuously zooms in popularity, many organizations have endeavoured to integrate their corporate social responsibility by sponsoring or even holding race events that aim to support and benefit specific charitable institutions and foundations. This is a very pleasing development.

Institutionalizing the humanitarian dimension of running and race events is what the Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN) aims to accomplish in staging “The Amazing Kidney Race.” All proceeds of this race event will be used for supporting the kidney disease awareness campaign of PSN and the operation and treatment of indigent kidney patients. Likewise, this race is among the platform events of PSN to join the global celebration of World Kidney Day 2010.

We are inviting you to be our partner in this worthy cause. In line with our invitation for you to be part of this activity we would like to offer a sponsorship package for you to fully maximize your presence in the event and promote your company, products and services. Please see attachments for the details.

We would be more than glad to discuss the details with you. Should you need further clarifications, you may contact us though landline numbers 554-8488 or mobile number 0915-2966116 (look for Dr. Czarlota Valdenor).

Thank You.

Sincerely,

Dear Colleagues

Dear Colleagues:

Greetings from PSN! I hope that you are all well and AH1N1-free. I am very happy to inform you that the PSN Midyear Convention will be held as planned this coming October, 2009 but in a different but equally exciting venue. Due to strong security concerns the Organizing Committee in Cagayan de Oro decided to cancel the Midyear there last July 10. But PSN being a society who responds well in a crisis situation decided in an emergency meeting of the board that the PSN Midyear Convention should push through. Let us extend our warmest thanks to Dr. Gina Nazareth and our colleagues in Southern Tagalog who immediately responded to our call by taking on the challenge of organizing the midyear.

Arrangements for our 10th PSN Midyear Convention is currently being finalized and we will email/write to you the final dates and venue as soon as the new Organizing Committee makes a decision. The possible dates are October 13-15, or the original schedule of October 15-17. Venue will either be in the Taal Vista Hotel or Club Balai Isabel in Talisay, Batangas. The theme of the convention is “Clinical Nephrology: Filtering and Absorbing New Evidence”. We will have an ISN COMGAN speaker in the person of Dr. Richard Phoon from Australia who will talk about rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and paraprotein related kidney diseases. The rest of the lectures will be given by our local colleagues. Philhealth benefits updates is also being planned.

So, please block the possible dates in your calendar and let us all look forward to an exciting midyear convention in the same old PSN tradition of combining serious, honest-to-goodness work with relaxing and camaraderie building activities.

Very truly yours,

Dolores D. Bonzon, MD

PSN President
