St. Luke's Medical Center
The
Section of Nephrology of the Department of Medicine of the St. Luke's Medical Center
started its fellowship training in 1989 and since then, it already has a total of
22 nephrology fellows who had graduated from its 2-year fellowship program. . Its
1st graduate is the current chief of section, Dr. Benjamin A. Balmores, Jr. Through
the years, the SLMC Section of Nephrology continuously adheres in its vision of
giving the highest standard of excellence in training and research in the field
of Nephrology as required by the Philippine Society of Nephrology. It trains, regulates
and support Nephrologist to be competitive, ethical, excellent and compassionate.
It commits to the highest quality of care for the patient as it participates in
renal related public health programs.
The
section consists of 9 committees with its respective consultants/chairpersons. It
has the 1) training committee 2) research 3) OPD on clinical nephrology and renal
transplantation 4) critical care 5) hemo and peritoneal dialysis 6) external affairs
and socials 7) post-graduate/renal week affairs 8) library and 9) ways and means.
It also supervises three ancillary services of the hospital namely: 1) renal or
hemodialysis unit 2) peritoneal dialysis 3) continuous renal replacement therapy
(CRRT). The Renal Unit houses 10 hemodialysis machines, 8 hepatitis free and 2 hepatitis
positive. It is under the Dialysis committee with two hemodialysis fellows (first
year Nephrology fellow and a second year fellow supervising the first year). CRRT
is done in the critical care areas supervised by the Critical Care Committee and
a second year critical care fellow assigned for the month. The Peritoneal Dialysis
is done in designated nursing units whose staff would include nurses who have undergone
Peritoneal Dialysis courses given by the section.
THE STAFF
The
Section of Nephrology consists of 14 active, 3 associate active and 21 affiliate
consultants. It has 6 Nephrology Fellows-in-training, 3 senior and 3 first year
fellows. One of the senior fellows is the chief fellow.
The
members of the consultant staff are included in the section after satisfying the
Article III on Membership of the Amended By-Laws of the SLMC Medical Staff Organization
(MSO). The Consultant Staff are designated according to the Article IV on Medical
Staff of the Amended By-Laws of the MSO. Their classification, requirements, privileges,
duties and responsibilities are enumerated in the various sections of the said article.
Similarly, the Nephrology Fellows-in-Training is designated according to Section
1.8 of the Article IV of Amended By-laws of the MSO.
FELLOWSHIP TRAINING
The
Section of Nephrology of the St. Luke's Medical Center, being a JCIA-accredited
hospital inculcates to its trainees the specialized skills, attitude, and knowledge
required to be competent nephrologists. It ensues that its trainees have fulfilled
all the requirements set by the Philippine Specialty Board in Nephrology and be
eligible to take the certifying examination. The trainees should have acquired basic
research techniques and finished at least one research study.
The
Program is designed to offer a two-year core program in Clinical Nephrology. Throughout
the program the trainee is expected to assume increasing responsibility for patient
care commensurate with their abilities and experience. At all levels of training,
the trainee is expected to provide clinical teaching to other trainees who are more
junior (clerks, interns, residents, co-fellows).
The
clinical activities are centered at St. Luke's Medical Center however, it provides
a one-month rotation at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute during second
year of training. St. Luke's Medical Center is equipped with facilities necessary
for training - Clinical Nephrology, Peritoneal dialysis, Hemodialysis, Critical
Care, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, Renal biopsy, Pathology, Radiology and
Renal Transplantation. It has facilities for outpatient dialysis and consultation
(social service patients and private clinics of the Nephrology staff) including
laboratory chemistry accessible for trainees' review and verification of results.
