Section History
The
Artificial Kidney Unit of the Santo Tomas University Hospital (STUH) is a product
of the pioneering work of Dr. Romeo Abella, a filipino nephrologist who introduced
the concept of renal replacement therapy(RRT) in the Philippines. He installed the
first hemodialysis machine in this hospital, providing the chronic renal failure
patients with a new lease in life. Dr. Aurora Padolina-Perez later installed another
machine in 1969. Together, these two doctors can be considered as one of the pillars
of hemodialysis therapy in the Philippines. They introduced kidney transplantation
in the country with the first successful transplantation done in this institution
in 1969 with Dr. Domingo Antonio Jr. as the transplant surgeon.
After
Dr. Abella left for the United States, Dr. Perez was appointed as Head of the unit.
She personally trained nurses and midwives to assist the patients. In a few years,
the increasing demand for such treatment led to the acquisition of new machines
donated by Mrs. Greta Go of YSS Laboratories. In 1973, Dr. Libertad Nazareno-Rosales,
newly trained from Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, New Jersey, joined the team.
It was this hospital, with the help of its Director in the Section of Nephrology
Dr. Reymour Ribot, which donated two machines to the unit thus ably accomodating
both private and charity patients.
With
the increasing number of patients, the need to train more nephrologists became apparent.
In 1984, the training program in Adult Nephrology under the Department of Medicine,
was started, with Dr. Oscar Naidas as the first fellow-in-training. Several other
graduates followed and are now competent nephrologists practicing in different parts
of the country.
In 1992,
Dr. Tito P. Toralba, then Chairman of the Depatment of Medicine, established the
Section of Nephrology as a distinct and separate subspecialty with Dr. Libertad
Nazareno-Rosales as its first chief of Section.
In 1995,
Dr. Padolina-Perez established the UST Transplant Foundation to assist indigent
patients who need to undergo kidney transplantation. This led to an increase of
transplants done in this institution, further strengthening the training in this
subspecialty.
In 1997,
Dr. Nazareno-Rosales, recognizing the need for a peritoneal dialysis unit, broached
the idea to Dr. Ramon Sin, then the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery
and concurrent Medical Director of the hospital. With his generous support, the
STUH Peritoneal Dialysis Unit came into fruition and was inaugurated on September
26,1997.
Through
all these years, the Section has continually improved its services and facilities,
fueled by its vision of enhancing the quality of life of patients with end stage
renal disease(ESRD). In August 2001, keeping with its purpose, the Artificial Kidney
Unit underwent a complete renovatiuon with acquisition of ten new hemodialysis machines
and now renamed as the "Center for Kidney Disease". More than a change in name the
unit has certainly become a center well equipped to meet the challenges of the new
millenium.
