The
Pediatric Nephrology Training Program at the University of Philippines- Philippine
General Hospital is a two year training program designed to train physicians in
both clinical pediatric nephrology, basic research and teaching in this discipline.
The objective is to train well-qualified candidates for careers as independent physician
scientists and academic Pediatric Nephrologists. The focus of the combined clinical
and laboratory training is to teach the methods by which new knowledge is acquired.
The
Section of Pediatric Nephrology seeks to provide quality care to the children all
over the country through the evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic pediatric
kidney diseases. Included in this goal is the provision of renal replacement therapy,
including chronic dialysis and kidney transplantation, to children with end stage
renal disease, as well as support for their families.
The
Section is also committed to teaching medical students and house staff the principles
of recognizing, evaluating, and treating fluid and electrolyte problems and renal
disease in children. In this regard, the Section also serves as a source of continuing
medical education for the general pediatric community.
Research
is an integral activity of the members of the Section of Pediatric Nephrology at
the UP- PGH. The interests of the faculty are diverse and include bench research
in renal physiology and pathophysiology, molecular aspects of renal development
and clinical studies in hypertension, kidney stones, and estimates of glomerular
filtration rate.
Training
is closely coordinated with the UP College of Medicine Department of Physiology
and Pathology, the UP-PGH Adult Renal Unit, and the National Kidney and Transplant
Institute Section of Immunopathology. The Department of Pediatrics is likewise the
home of 15 other subspecialties like Hematology-Oncology, Genetics, Endocrinology
